What is God's grace?

This question occurred to me this morning and I realised that I don't really know.

Whenever I start writing (and admittedly if I remember to do so) I say a prayer: Lord, by the help of your grace may I write well. When I say this prayer, I am asking God to give me something that will help me write in a way that is good, beautiful, and true: in short, holy. But what is that something? A spiritual food, perhaps? But isn't that what, in a manner of speaking, the Eucharist is? Maybe I am asking for a little of God's spirit. But if I am, aren't I just asking for His Holy Spirit?

I'm sure grace must be different to both the Eucharist and Holy Spirit as I can't see why the Church would go to the effort of developing the concept of grace when it was only talking about something that it already knew existed. Quite what it is, though, I have yet to find out.

Time to hit the bookcase and Google!

with prayers,

Malcolm
